Meet the Founder
Hi, I’m Rosemary King-Allen, the heart and hands behind Dreammaker Design Studio, and let me tell you—sewing has been in my DNA since I was a kid.
It all started when I was 8 years old, designing and hand-sewing outfits for my Barbie collection—Barbie, Midge (her BFF), Skipper & Francie (her cousins), Ken (her boyfriend), and Midge’s boyfriend, Alan. My mother, a talented seamstress, taught me the different types of stitches to connect my tiny garments, and I picked it up fast. So fast, in fact, that I started teaching my best friend Joann.
Sewing wasn’t just a hobby in our house, it was a business. My mother took in sewing orders for extra income, and she had a brilliant idea: if my friend and I helped hem the ball gowns she was making, she’d pay us $3 per hem. That was all the motivation we needed! My first sewing club was officially in motion, and soon, I was part of a whole sewing operation.
We helped with choir robes, Eastern Stars' ball gowns, and even alterations for the local cleaners. Every week, groups of 12 or more women would visit our home, each wanting dresses made from the same fabric for their special events. Sewing became more than a skill—it was a community, a connection, and a creative space where I learned the power of teamwork.
By junior high, my friends and I were having sewing parties—gathering to stitch up new outfits, swap design ideas, and, of course, laugh and talk for hours. That spirit of collaboration and creativity is what fashion is really about, and I carried that energy with me into my career.
As an educator, I brought sewing into the classroom, launching one of the first after-school programs in Newark, NJ, where students didn’t just make pillows—they created actual garments. Seeing their excitement and confidence grow with every stitch made me realize that sewing is more than just making clothes—it’s about self-expression, skill-building, and community.
Then, COVID changed everything. I knew I needed a safe, spacious, and inspiring place where people—of all ages—could come together, spread out when needed, and let their creative juices flow. That’s when Dreammaker Design Studio came to life.
Now, I get to share my passion with others every day. Whether you're brand new to sewing or a seasoned pro, this studio is your place to learn, create, and be part of something special. Because here, we believe that if you can Dream It, You Can Make It!
I can't wait to sew with you!
